We domesticate the ocean as we sail

From my log, night of 16/17 December 2009, on passage across the Tehuantepec, Ecuador to Mexico, Adrienne and I, sailing our boat to Australia.

We domesticate the ocean as we sail across or through it – with our bunks for sleeping, galleys for cooking, the Persian rug on the floor, the glow of the computer screen and the radio. But out on deck the night, the stars, and the wind take us far from that cosy little scene: as the boat rocks and furrows over the bosomy waves we find ourselves taken to strange unspeakable places, universes, where ourselves are already waiting, saying “What kept you?”
